a couple weeks ago nick preached a sermon on unknown gods. in one of paul's letters, paul describes a religious city. this city is very religious, on every street corner the citizens have erected shrines and idols for every god they know. they have gone so far as to create an altar for an unknown god.
paul comes to the city and proclaims to the people that he infact knows this unknown god.
nick then said, "people of jersey city, you are a religious people. i have walked around your streets and seen altars and shrines to various gods. i have even seen statues placed for unknown gods. "
he listed some of our altars and sacrifices for unknown gods:
sleeping around because we need love
constantly worrying about what others are thinking of us because we crave accpetance
working too much to find our validation and to provide for our families
i can't remember any others- the theme being that we erect altars for our own gods as we strive to complete, do, relate in our own power for our own good. we are free from this toil. we serve one god--- and he has fulfilled the sacrifice in his own son.
